Kaye Johnston's latest offering - the 'mad cow woman' is back Who could ever forget the colourfully striking works in Kay Johnston's exhibition at Nowra's Tea Club two years ago. Following this successful solo exhibition, Johnston was dubbed the 'mad cow woman', which is one way of seeing her work. There is more to it than that, however. 'Milk & Honey', Johnston's second solo exhibition will run at the Tea Club 9-22 October and will be opened by writer, Chris Mansell on October 14 at 6.30pm. In these latest works, Johnston celebrates the beauty and drama of life in Kangaroo Valley, which is not all 'milk and honey'. Together with the humour and colour, the movement and fun, goes an underlying concern for the environment and especially the animals. Johnston makes strong political statements in some of the works. Approaching the big picture in a variety of ways, Johnston creates landscapes, still lifes, fantasy, forests and a confronting self-portrait. The cows are still there, going about their business of surviving in a world which is often hostile and cruel. The humour of their situation also contains strong feminist ideas on the treatment of farm animals. Local landmarks are there, such as Drawing Room Rocks, but Johnston does not produce conventional pictures. These landscapes are recognisable as local places but her bold use of colour makes them into something new and fresh. The works include still lifes, flower close-ups and forest interiors, instantly recognisable to lovers of the rainforest. There are bold abstracts derived from the riot of colour in her garden. And the picture which won the People's Prize in the 1999 Meroogal Women's Art Prize is there. Take the opportunity to view these new works by Kaye Johnston which celebrate life in this most beautiful corner of the world. Enjoy a feast for the eyes, mind and heart as well as see the development in her work over the past two years.
